New Orleans is a four point favorite at San Francisco on Saturday, and that’s a tempting price. The Saints have been red-hot in the second-half of the season, and four isn’t a big number for so high-scoring a team.
In the 49ers’ favor is the fact that the game is in San Francisco, and the Niners have had an extra week’s rest. But if the game gets away from them, it’s hard to see how the Niners can come back. The Niners’ success this year is built on a tough defense, but the offense can’t rack up the scores like New Orleans. Very few can. And, as we saw last weekend, once Cinderella gets her feet trodden on a few times, she tends to lose interest. New Orleans -4 at San Francisco is the first pick of the week.
The big game on Saturday is Denver’s trip to New England, where the Patriots are a huge -13.5 point favorite. Denver’s straight-up win last week hasn’t really changed the perception of the team and, looking back, maybe the Steelers have started showing their age more than we had thought.
New England isn’t showing any signs of age. The defense is awful, but Brady has won one shootout against Tebow and there is no reason to think he won’t win another. New England -13.5 at home to Denver with Sports Interaction is the pick.
On Sunday, Houston will surely come to the end of the line at Baltimore. Jim Harbaugh will probably win coach of the year but Gary Kubiak should be in the reckoning for all he’s done at Houston to make the Texans winners – and to deal with the injuries Houston has had during the year.
But you can only go to the well so often. Arian Foster is the key to the game – if Baltimore can shut down Foster the Houston offense shuts down with him. Baltimore will struggle on offense but I get a feeling that Houston could fall apart at the end, just as Cincinnati did. Baltimore -7.5 against Houston with Sports Interaction is the pick.
Finally. Although Denver at New England will get the ink, the Giants’ trip to Lambeau is the real game of the week this weekend. Brett Favre is the man who must not be named in Wisconsin these days, but you can be sure that the Packers haven’t forgiven the Giants for ruining what could have been Favre’s farewell season the year the Giants won in Green Bay and went on to win the Super Bowl. The Pack want revenge.
But sometimes, what you want isn’t what you can get. The Packers have to cover -7.5 points against the Giants, and that’s a big number against a team that’s playing as well as the Giants, who may be becoming the January Men of the NFL. Green Bay was a -7.5 point favorite at the Giants back in Week 13 and was glad to get away with a 38-35 win.
